"New Leaves" 1915 |
| This painting filled with new leaves budding from treetops of all types transmits well the feeling of the artist. The work is filled with a freshness that is almost unthinkable for something executed early in the Taisho period (1910-1926). |

Hayami Gyoshu: Born in Asakusa, Tokyo, in 1892. Studied under Matsumoto Fuko and later followed his colleague, Imamura Shiko, in joining the Kojikai. In 1914, he formed a group called Sekiyokai to study new styles of Japanese painting. He had a leg amputated after being hit by a train in 1919, but the incident seemed to increase his fighting spirit. He devoted himself to creation and enthusiastically submitted numerous works to the Inten Exhibition as well as touring Europe in 1930. His flower and bird drawings in India ink painting style and his portraits are said to express a noble existence. He died from sickness at age 41. |
