Amid a forest in deep autumn two bucks lock antlers. The roots of the large tree visible in the background and the figures of the deer produce a feeling of tension, and the work shows the harshness of nature. |

Yamaguchi Kayo: Born in Kyoto in 1899. He studied painting under Nishimura Goun. He exhibited mainly with the Kanten Exhibition while studying at the Kyoto Municipal College of Painting and won recognition from art circles early in his career. He taught at the Kyoto Municipal Art College in 1942, and after World War II, became a leading figure in Kyoto's art community, where he contributed to its development in many ways, such as by serving as juror for the Nitten Exhibition. |
