Kobayashi Kokei: Born in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, in 1883. He moved to Tokyo when he turned 17 and studied historical painting under Kajita Hanko. Exhibiting his works at the Inten and Bunten Exhibitions, he became acquainted with Okakura Tenshin, who greatly inspired him. He studied among such promising young artists as Maeda Seison and Hayami Gyoshu at the Koji Group, which he was invited to join by Yasuda Yukihiko. After a visit to Europe in 1922, he developed a naturalistic style and graceful neo-classical style. |
