"Yang Guifei"
1951
This Noh play is based on the original version by Kanesuke Noguchi of the Hosho School. Viewers will feel the solemn tension in the air, created by the profound sway of the stage's bead curtain and the highly restrained movements of the actor.
Image Kobayashi Kokei:
Born in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, in 1883. He moved to Tokyo when he turned 17 and studied historical painting under Kajita Hanko. Exhibiting his works at the Inten and Bunten Exhibitions, he became acquainted with Okakura Tenshin, who greatly inspired him. He studied among such promising young artists as Maeda Seison and Hayami Gyoshu at the Koji Group, which he was invited to join by Yasuda Yukihiko. After a visit to Europe in 1922, he developed a naturalistic style and graceful neo-classical style.
