"Gold-Painted Porcelain Vase"
1945
Also called gold brocaded porcelain, this style is named after what looks like gold brocade laid upon the object, an effect achieved through designs in gold leaf and powder on the object being fired. This is one of Rosanjin's most dazzling and gorgeous works, and no similar vase exists.
Image Kitaoji Rosanjin
Born in Kyoto in 1883. He earned his living by shodo, the brush calligraphy of Japanese letters, and seal carving. Later, he acquired an interest in cuisine and its preparation. In 1919, he opened the Taigado antique store in Tokyo. Dishes served to specific customers upstairs at Taigado became a topic of conversation, so he eventually established Bishoku Club (Gourmet Club) as an annex to Taigado. In 1925, he opened Hoshigaoka-saryo, which served fine foods. When he realized the importance of serving food in the most suitable containers, he began to make his own dishes. Thus he created a comprehensive world of artful cuisine and its preparation. His body of work includes calligraphy, carvings, paintings, lacquerware, ceramics, and gold art. Adachi Museum owns about 200 of his works spanning from his early to late periods, and around 40 of these are exhibited in the Kitaoji Rosanjin Room at any time. The exhibit is changed four times a year.
