Japanese Paintings for Exhibitions

The Adachi Museum’s collection of modern Japanese paintings includes many works produced for exhibitions. Since the Meiji Era, the Japanese art world has been particularly dynamic, in contrast to much of the rest of Japanese art history: When the Japanese Art Institute was founded, it marked the first time that a national art exhibition was held in Japan, and in the Taisho Era, the Association for the Creation of National Painting (Kokuga Sosaku Kyokai) and many other organizations for the study of art were established. Through exhibitions by such organizations, painters improved their skills and continuously produced masterpieces and topical works.
Exhibitions allow painters the opportunity to publicize their works, develop the will to produce paintings, and compete based on their skills and techniques. Therefore, most of the works produced for exhibitions were painted with additional enthusiasm, and they are generally regarded as representative works.
For this exhibition, we have selected only works that were produced for past exhibitions. These include works by Yokoyama Taikan and Yasuda Yukihiko for Inten, those by Kawai Gyokudo, Uemura Shoen and Ito Shinsui for Kanten, and those by Tsuchida Bakusen and Sakakibara Shiho. We hope you enjoy the various masterpieces by the great painters who left their marks in the world of modern Japanese art.
