Two Heroes of Kyoto Painting Circle
Takeuchi Seiho and Hashimoto Kansetsu

March 1 (Sun) ‐ May 31 (Sun), 2015
This exhibition will be show works by Takeuchi Seiho and Hashimoto Kansetsu, representatives of the Kyoto painting circle. Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942) was born in Kyoto and created new painting methods by incorporating Western realism into the Maruyama Shijo School’s traditional method of sketching. He played a role in establishing a government-sponsored exhibition and judging the exhibits. Since then, he mainly released masterpieces for national exhibitions. He also tried to foster junior painters by presiding over the private art school Chikujo-kai. Seiho flourished as a master of the Kyoto painting circle
Hashimoto Kansetsu (1883-1945) studied under Takeuchi Seiho, following the painting style of the Shijo School. However, he later attempted to develop his genius alone, spending time away from Seiho. While producing most of his works with inspiration from the Chinese classics, Kansetsu established his own art style to showcase his spirituality, and produced numerous masterpieces depicting animals in the Showa Period.
The two masters, Seiho and Kansetsu, pioneered their own methods in Kyoto at that time. Their stirring works made the modern Kyoto art world bright. We hope that you will appreciate their great works.
