Feel the Excitement of Japanese Paintings!
Animal Guide Book
June 1 (Thu) – August 30 (Wed), 2017
Animals have been selected and favored as a subject of Japanese painting since old times. “Animal paintings” in modern Japanese painting styles include various animals, such as dogs and cats, which are common sights in ordinary life, horses and cows, which have traditionally lived with people as domestic animals, monkeys and foxes, which give an atmosphere of wildness and tension, and fantastic creatures like dragons. Painters did not just paint the superficial features of these animals; they infused religious meanings or personalized the animals using a wide range of expression methods. Every animal painting was vividly painted based on the painters’ insights, often giving the illusion that the animals are about to come alive. These approachable, attractive works attract the viewer’s attention.
This exhibition will display animal paintings by modern Japanese painters. Animals “appear” in the exhibition room as if the exhibits are an “Animal Guide Book.” What feelings did the painters when they caught the animals’ figures, and how did they express them? Looking through the painters’ eyes, we hope you enjoy the world of animal painting.
