Themes of Japanese Painting
Beauty Loved by Masters

December 1 (Sun), 2019 ‐ February 29 (Sat), 2020
In Japanese paintings, you can see various themes, including seasonal flowers, dainty and profound landscapes, and the features of familiar animals and human beings. Painters usually take what they want to express as a subject for each painting, but sometimes produce multiple works under the same theme.
For example, Yokoyama Taikan depicted so many works of Mt. Fuji throughout his life that he was said to be the "Painter of Fuji," and Kawai Gyokudo continuously painted rustic rural landscapes that give the impression of people. Hashimoto Kansetsu, who had previously depicted numerous Chinese-themed objects and events, began to depict mainly animal paintings in the Showa Era. The themes that painters often depict tend to be the art they repeatedly and eagerly pursued. In other words, it is the beauty they heartily love.
This exhibition will display works, focusing on subjects that modern painters depicted many times throughout their lives. We hope that you will enjoy the beauty loved and pursued by great Japanese masters.

Selected Works from the Taikan Collection --Winter--

We will display different works of Mt. Fuji, including a large piece arranging the morning sun with the divine mountain and a work depicting flying cranes against a background of Fuji. Besides those works of Mt. Fuji, which was Taikan's favorite theme, we will showcase Morning in the Mountains / Evening in the Mountains, a suiboku-ga masterpiece painted with sumi ink. Please appreciate these masterpieces by Taikan, who had a passion for creating new Japanese painting styles.
