Many small angels gather around a large elephant. They are flying, with animated gestures. One is playing an instrument, and another is carrying food. What is the story behind this work? This is a pleasant work that enhances our imagination.

Suzuki Toshio

1904‐1975
Suzuki Toshio was born in Tokyo. Inspired by the works of Kawakami Shiro, Suzuki painted images of children in this style. Suzuki’s paintings were excellent in their symbolic expression of children and animals. As a result, his picture books were recommended by the Education Ministry before WWII. During WWII, Suzuki was a high school teacher. Following the war, Suzuki retired from his teaching position and started painting children pictures again. In 1946, he participated in the establishment of the “Japanese Children Painting Society.” Since 1961, the year in which this association was dissolved, Suzuki released his works as a coterie of the Japanese Children Painting Association.
