Selection of Contemporary Japanese Paintings Ⅰ Listen to Sounds in Paintings

Date: Wed, Jun 25 - Wed, October 22, 2025

When facing a work of art, the “sound,” which is inaudible, can be conveyed by trying to listen to it. In works full of a sense of presence, including landscapes or scenes depicted in a realistic manner based on the painter’s intimate, on-site investigations and experience, if the viewer tries to listen to the sounds implied by the work before them, they might be able to fully enter the world of Japanese painting.
For this exhibition, focusing on “sound,” we will display such works that the viewer might elicit a desire to listen. The water surface of a pond rippling in the rain, a sky filled with fireworks, a train running along the track—from these scenes with motion, we hope various sounds will please you.

Selection of Contemporary Japanese Paintings Ⅰ The Aesthetic World by Masters of Contemporary Japanese Painting

Date: Wed, Jun 25 - Tue, October 21, 2025

The Japan Art Institute, whose exhibitions are called Inten, is one of the representative art organizations of the current Japanese art world. In Inten, painters are categorized depending on their frequency and history of winning awards. The top-ranked painters, who are regular members, are also engaged in holding exhibitions and managing the organization. Regular members can be called masters of contemporary Japanese paintings.
This exhibition will display works by these painters, focusing on their large-scale works. A succession of the presidents, from Hirayama Ikuo, Matsuo Toshio, to Tabuchi Toshio, and regular members, including Nabatame Koichi, Tezuka Yuji, and Matsumura Koji—all have contributed to the enrichment of the Japanese art world. Please enjoy works by those masters.
